BC Place Reopens with Largest Cable-Supported Retractable Roof in the World

VANCOUVER, British Columbia— Less than a year and a half after it closed for a complete renovation, PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. has completed BC Place, Vancouver’s 55,000-seat sports stadium. The renovation includes a new cable-supported retractable roof, the largest of its kind in the world.
BC Place Retractable Roof
Several PCL executives, owners representatives, architects, consultants, and others were in attendance at the grand opening on September 30, 2011, as British Columbia Premier Christy Clark cut the ribbon and opened the doors to enthusiastic crowds who saw a Canadian Football League game between the BC Lions and the Edmonton Eskimos in the refurbished facility. The massive retractable roof, extremely complicated in design, opened without a hitch before the more than 50,000 people in attendance. “It was an awesome experience, seeing the BC sky revealed as the roof retracted. Thinking of the obstacles our people had to overcome to get the entire stadium ready for this day and to make sure that roof worked perfectly … it was breathtaking,” says Dave Filipchuk, regional VP, Western Canadian Buildings.
The facility will host the 2011 Grey Cup on November 27.
The construction of the new cable-supported retractable roof was one of the many complicated components of the revitalization project. As described in the BC Place media release, “The centre portion of the roof is made of highly flexible fabric. When drawn inward to collect in the centre, it creates a roof opening as large as the playing field below. Opening and closing the roof takes about 20 minutes. The outer roof meanwhile consists of fixed fabric panels that protect all 55,000 spectator seats, even if it rains while the retracted roof is open.”
