GLENDALE AND FULLERTON, Calif. (March 16, 2012) – PCL Construction Services, Inc., in association with Steinberg Architects, is pleased to announce the recent LEED® Platinum certification of the California State University, Fullerton Student Housing Phase III project in Fullerton, California.
We are proud to build the first LEED® Platinum certified project in the California State University system and the largest-ever construction project on the Fullerton campus,” said David Yount, PCL Los Angeles vice president and district manager. “The design and layout of the facilities position CSU Fullerton as a leader in providing students with a modern and sustainable housing environment.”
The project was completed in August 2011 and includes housing administration offices, conference and classroom space, laundry, community rooms on every level, and a central plant. Extensive site work includes a large central pedestrian piazza area with a fountain, new student parking lot, generous landscaping, improvements to campus-wide storm drainage, and utility infrastructure.
“Housing & Residence Life is now home to 1,900 students living and learning on campus—the latest phase of housing more than doubled the residential population,” said Stephen Chamberlain, sr. project manager at CSU Fullerton. “It was important to us that this facility fosters positive student socialization and academic achievement while integrating leading sustainability strategies.”
The 347,899-square-foot student housing complex comprises six buildings with a total of 1,056 beds. Typical rooms are double occupancy, built in a traditional dormitory style and distributed among five buildings, each of five stories. The sixth single-level building contains a dining hall and central plant.
To obtain LEED® certification, projects must follow strict guidelines during design and construction. Sustainable construction operations, waste diversion, and water-and-energy efficient practices were incorporated by the team. Some examples of these practices include:
- Four-pipe central plant HVAC system
- Bioswales to manage storm water
- Low water use irrigation and plant selection
- Low flow plumbing fixtures
- Highly energy efficient glass and window systems
- Energy management systems
- High efficiency lighting and lighting controls
- LED outdoor lighting
- Discriminate building orientation onsite
- Recycling of existing site paving and concrete materials onsite
- Enhanced commissioning
LEED® was established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and projects are certified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI). LEED® is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED® Platinum is the highest LEED® rating and certified buildings rank among the greenest in the world.
