Making this list for six consecutive years is attributed by PCL’s unique employee ownership culture.” The organization’s employee-owned structure, wellness initiatives, philanthropic efforts, and training programs all contributed to this milestone achievement by PCL, a leader in the construction industry. Even though the recession has taken a toll on the entire US construction industry, Denny Dahl, director of Human Resources, says that PCL has not stopped developing and sustaining a great workplace. “In spite of the difficult economic challenges we’re facing, PCL has actually made improvements to our benefit program by adding a fifth week of vacation for our longer-term employees and an additional holiday. At the same time, we have maintained all of our other exceptional benefits and continued to provide salary increases and annual bonuses to demonstrate our commitment to our employee teammates and their families.” To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. Three hundred eleven companies participated in this year's survey. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the Institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third of the scoring is based on the company's responses to the Institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, internal communications, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.
