John was instrumental to Poole Construction’s early success. He and his brother, George, went to work for their father in early adulthood, they purchased the company from him in 1948, and they were at its helm until the sale to employees in 1977. John helped build Poole Construction into one of PCL’s president and CEO Ross Grieve reflects on John Poole: “John was a true gentleman. He was a man who had wonderful values and a great zest for life. Even after the sale of his interest in Poole Construction in 1977 he remained extremely interested in how and what PCL was doing and was so proud of PCL’s accomplishments. He was a wonderful role model for us all on how to live our lives.” John remained a part of the PCL family after his retirement, and he was a familiar face at many client and staff events. He played a significant role in the contracting organization’s 2006 centennial celebrations. John’s boundless energy and thoughtful philanthropic contributions have made him and his wife, Barbara, into pillars of the John was predeceased by his father, Ernie Poole, in 1964 and his brother, George, in 1997.
