This anchor for the Minneapolis library system includes multimedia learning spaces, gallery areas, and a striking multistory commons in a 500,000-square-foot, five-level structure. It was designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli and Associates, with design support by Architectural Alliance.
The interior focus of the project is a dramatic multistory central atrium. Its grand staircase was constructed as a continuous steel stringer, featuring solid maple treads and glass rails. PCL was selected on a “best value” basis prior to design completion in order to assess and resolve a series of construction challenges related to design. For example, the choice of fin tube radiation as the primary source of building perimeter heating demanded meticulous attention to design details to ensure the system functioned properly once installed. PCL assumed responsibility for all penetration routing and sealing to assure performance, as well as code and environmental compliance.
The Central Library’s location on an entire city block in downtown Minneapolis presented logistical challenges for the PCL team, who worked closely with the City of Minneapolis and the Minneapolis Police Department to maintain he tsafe movement of people, traffic, and materials in and around the project site.
