About the Partnership/Project

The project is a bundled design-build package of two (2) new interchanges in separate areas of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

This package includes one new interchange at the intersection of Highway 16 and Boychuk Drive and another at the intersection of College Drive and McOrmond Drive. Both of these locations are on the east side of Saskatoon. Currently, both of these intersections interface with the noted provincial highways via at-grade intersections, which experience high traffic volumes, especially at morning and late afternoon peak commuting times.
Both intersections see long traffic queues for the eastbound to northbound movement onto the Boychuk Drive and McOrmond Drive crossroads during the afternoon peak timeThe requirements for the project are summarized below.

McOrmond Interchange

The project will be designed and constructed so as to accommodate the future upgrading of College Drive to six lanes, as well accommodating but not limited to the design and construction of interchange ramps, structure, drainage systems, and placement of utilities. The College Drive lanes will be maintained in their current location, no alteration or narrowing of the centre median or divided cross section will be permitted at this time.

McOrmond Drive north of College Drive is currently a four-lane divided roadway providing two lanes in each direction. The project will provide three northbound through lanes and two southbound through lanes on McOrmond Drive north of the interchange.

Other notable items included in the scope of work

  • Multiuse pathways will be provided on both sides of McOrmond Drive and extend from Kerr Road to the south project limit.
  • The McOrmond Interchange includes the construction of new sound walls along the north side of College Drive west of McOrmond Drive and along the west side of McOrmond Drive north of College Drive.
  • Street lighting will be provided for all McOrmond Interchange roadways. The project also includes the installation of street lighting along College Drive from McOrmond Drive to the eastern limit of the existing College Drive street lighting, east of McKercher Drive.
  • Both of the McOrmond Interchange intersections will be signalized.
  • Additional sidewalk ramps are to be installed at the intersection of McOrmond Drive and Kerr Road.

Boychuk Interchange

Highway 16 is a four-lane divided provincial highway under the operational jurisdiction of the City of Saskatoon. The project will be designed and constructed so as to accommodate the future upgrade of Highway 16 to six lanes, as well accommodating but not limited to the design and construction of interchange ramps (including future ramps), structure, drainage systems, and placement of utilities.

Boychuk Drive north of Highway 16 is a four-lane divided arterial roadway. Boychuk Drive south of Highway 16 transitions to RM of Corman Park Range Road 3050. RR 3050 is a two-lane paved roadway with a rural cross section. The construction of the Boychuk Interchange involves the realignment of RM of Corman Park Township Road 362. Twp. Rd. 362 east and west of Boychuk Drive will be a two-lane paved roadway with a rural cross section. Portions of the existing Township Road 362 that will no longer be required will be obliterated.

Other notable items included in the scope of work

  • A multiuse pathway will be provided on the east side of Boychuk Drive from Rosewood Boulevard to the north intersection of the interchange and along the west side of Boychuk Drive from the north intersection of the interchange to the south project limit.
  • The Boychuk Interchange includes the construction and reconstruction of new sound walls along the north side of Highway 16 west of Boychuk Drive.
  • Street lighting will be provided for all Boychuk Interchange roadways other than for Township Road 362.
  • The north interchange intersection will be signalized.
  • New fencing is required west of Boychuk Drive south of Highway 16 as shown on the reference concept.
