At PCL we are proud to be a
partner in and sponsor events like the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race
(GNCTR). Doing so not only provides us with an opportunity to meet and network
with some of the best and brightest engineering students from across North
America, but also breeds a culture of innovation, passion, and teamwork. As
PCLers we pride ourselves on these traits and have adopted them into our
culture and business practices, which has led to the success of many of our
project teams and created a strong foundation for future projects.

This past year, PCL welcomed more
than 600 students from over 88 postsecondary institutions across North America
to our company-wide Student Program. The role that postsecondary institutions
play in fostering our success and that of our students is crucial. We are
incredibly proud of the relationships we’ve built and continue to build with
these schools, and are thankful to be a part of each student’s career path.
Students with Potential
PCL has been a longtime supporter
of employing students from across all disciplines, helping to foster their
knowledge and PCL’s succession planning, as we see each and every student as a
potential full-time employee. Did you know that many in management throughout
PCL started as summer students?
The PCL Student Program has
provided us with an excellent pipeline of talented and experienced new
graduates who are ready to hit the ground running. Last year alone, 68 former
PCL students were hired to full-time engineering positions, many of them having
competed in GNCTR.
Commitment to Education
Supporting and sponsoring GNCTR
is a way for PCL to show our commitment to the students and schools that
support our Student Program and to those who help to promote our entry-level
positions. PCL’s presence at the event also allows us the opportunity to gain
further exposure as a top employer and builder of choice, expanding our
recognition and network. For the past three years, Mitch Soetaert, PCL turnaround
and maintenance manager, has been a safety judge for GNCTR. “Keep your eyes open for GNCTR on a résumé,” Soetaert
enthused. “If you are lucky enough to meet one of these exceptional students,
ask some questions, get to know them; you won’t be disappointed. If they can
make concrete slide down a hill at 46 kilometers per hour in their free
time, think of what they can do on the job!”
is an event of tradition and one that pushes the limits of constructability,
something that PCL is very passionate about. We enjoyed hitting the hill with
GNCTR this year and look forward to participating in coming years, as we
continue to hold the Title Sponsorship position.
