Dave Espinosa started his PCL career a decade ago with the dream of working on exciting projects. His dream was quickly realized. “I joined PCL because I knew it came with opportunities that weren’t available at other companies,” said Espinosa. “While my friends from school were building gas stations, we were building federal buildings and hospitals.”

Espinosa worked for a different construction contractor in Missouri before joining PCL’s Denver office in 2004 as a field engineer on the Cape Girardeau Federal Courthouse project. He rapidly ascended the ranks at PCL, moving into the role of project engineer, and then project manager.
A Long History
When PCL asked Espinosa to project manage the design-build of the new Denver Mile High United Way Headquarters, the significance of this high-profile project wasn’t lost on him. PCL has partnered with United Way since 1969, and every PCL district in North America holds an annual fundraising campaign for their local agency. “I was told this was the job that would either make or break my career,” joked Espinosa.
The preconstruction team worked with United Way, and searched hundreds of potential sites before settling on a historic neighborhood in the heart of Denver. “It was unique because we wanted to find an area with demographics that would most benefit the organization,” said Espinosa.
The chosen location didn’t come without challenges. The site was flanked by three other historic areas, all with different sets of regulations that needed to be met for construction to proceed.
Coming Full Circle
Leading the United Way Headquarters project certainly represents the culmination of a successful career, but it is also special to Espinosa for personal reasons. When he moved to Denver to work for PCL nine years ago, Espinosa made his home in the same area. “I live within five blocks of the jobsite,” said Espinosa. “It’s a part of town that is currently underdeveloped, and I know this new building will really help to rejuvenate the area.”
The project is on schedule, and Denver hopes to celebrate the grand opening in the fall of 2014.
