EDMONTON, AB (Dec. 12, 2013) – The Glacier Skywalk was a triple winner at this year’s Alberta Construction Magazine Top Projects Awards, winning the Top Commercial Project (under $50 million), the Design-Commercial, and the first-ever People’s Choice Award.

“The Glacier Skywalk is a stunning structure built under extremely challenging circumstances,” said Rob Otway, vice president and district manager, of PCL Construction’s operations in Calgary. “Building award-winning projects is the result of a truly collaborative effort between PCL and our partners. We are honored to be recognized and look forward to continuing to deliver outstanding projects for our clients.”
PCL also received top honours in winning the Civil under $50 million category for the Saline Creek Drive and Bridges project as well as the Calgary Airport Trail Underpass in the Civil over $50 million category.
The Glacier Skywalk is a steel, glass, and concrete structure hanging 280 meters above Sunwapta Valley in Jasper National Park. The Saline Creek Drive and Bridges project is a critical piece of infrastructure spanning the Hangingstone River in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The Airport Trail Underpass is a 620-meter-long, 35-meter-wide underpass built underneath the new Calgary Airport runway.
“The projects that were nominated this year were outstanding,” said Chaz Osburn, editor of Alberta Construction Magazine. “They speak volumes about what industry is capable of accomplishing.”
PCL’s Keyano College Oilsands Power & Process Engineering Lab and the Slave Lake Government Centre and Library projects were named as finalists. Three other PCL projects received honorable mention, including the Peter Stalenhoef Centre of Modular Excellence, the SAIT Polytechnic TTC Phase 2, and the Walter C. MacKenzie Health Sciences Centre endoscopy suite relocation.
Winners of the 2013 Alberta Construction Magazine Top Projects Awards were announced at the Markin MacPhail Centre at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary on December 4. Winning projects were selected by a five-member panel of judges who considered such things as design functionality and appearance, environmental impact, the success of the construction process, unique or innovative construction materials, and the project delivery method when making their decision.
