CALGARY, Alberta (June 13, 2014) – PCL Construction is pleased to announce a $600,000 donation to the Canadian and American Red Cross. The commitment will see $100,000 donated annually to each of these national agencies over the next three years.
This is PCL’s second proactive donation to the Red Cross, which will bring PCL’s total contributions to the humanitarian organizations in North America to over $1 million. PCL has also provided funding to the Red Cross in the past in reaction to major disasters.
This new commitment comes a year after one of the most extensive natural disasters in Canadian history, the Southern Alberta floods. Like many businesses and families in the area, PCL Construction and its employees were impacted by the flooding. Many PCL employees dedicated themselves to providing relief support during the crisis.
“The Red Cross provides services that are essential and often lifesaving. Last summer, we witnessed those emergency services firsthand in Alberta,” said Paul Douglas, PCL president and CEO. “The Red Cross’s commitment to people and their communities around the world is inspiring, and it’s a commitment that we at PCL strive to emulate. This donation is a gesture of continued support for everything that they do to help prepare for when they are needed the most.”
The donation will provide financial support for emergency Red Cross services. It enables the organizations to better prepare communities throughout Canada and the United States for crisis situations through a proactive investment in disaster-response operations, training for disaster-response personnel, and establishing critical disaster-response infrastructure. A donation of $100,000 enables the Red Cross to shelter, feed, and care for 150 families for four to five days.
PCL has a history of supporting the Red Cross’s disaster response efforts, having provided financial support to the Red Cross during a number of crisis situations, including Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti Earthquake. In 2011, PCL committed to its first three-year, $600,000 donation to the Red Cross. At the time, the donation was among the first of its kind. This proactive approach saved money by supporting disaster response preparation, rather than reactively funding a specific disaster response operation.
The latest Red Cross donation is a continuation of the 2011 agreement, and is another example of a company-wide commitment to both proactive preparation and the communities in which PCL employees live and work.
