EDMONTON, AB - The PCL family of companies is pleased to announce that Doug Stollery, the company’s general counsel, is the recipient of the Canadian General Counsel of the Year Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award, given as part of the Canadian General Counsel Awards (CGCA), highlights Stollery’s achievements throughout his career in the legal profession with PCL and his 30-year employment with Reynolds Mirth Richards Farmer LLP.

“Doug’s extensive list of accomplishments made him a deserving candidate for this award, as he has helped lead our company through increasingly complex issues while maintaining the traditional principles — such as our word is our bond — that PCL was founded on,” said PCL president and CEO Paul Douglas. “He was a pioneer of the “alliance” contracting model put into place for the Terra Nova project in Newfoundland, which led to unprecedented levels of collaboration among stakeholders. He contributed significantly to the development of a P3 platform and processes that ultimately became the recognized P3 standard across the country.”
After graduating as a silver medalist from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 1976, Stollery completed a clerkship at the Supreme Court of Canada, and went on to obtain a Master of Laws degree at Harvard Law School.
His accomplishments include his work on Vriend v. Alberta, a landmark human rights decision from the Supreme Court of Canada, where he personally argued the case on a pro bono basis. The decision of the Supreme Court of Canada in this case has been recognized as one of the “Top 10” Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms decisions since the Charter was introduced in 1982.
The Canadian General Counsel Awards are an annual award program designed to honor excellence in the In-House Counsel community. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a senior member of the in-house bar who has a distinguished history as general counsel, a demonstrated commitment to excellence and leadership within the legal profession, and who has made a lasting contribution to their work community and the community at large. Previous recipients of the award can be found at www.cgca.ca.
