SEATTLE—September 28, 2012—PCL Civil Constructors, Inc. has been awarded the contract for the $169 million design-build South 200th Link Extension Project by the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority (Sound Transit). HDR Engineering, Inc. is the lead designer for the project.
Seattle South 200th Link Extension
The project will expand the existing light rail system from Sea-Tac Airport to a new interim terminal station at South 200th Street and 28th Avenue South. It involves designing and building 1.6 miles of double-track light rail transit on an elevated guideway, including a new passenger station, transit systems, and associated civil infrastructure improvements.
Key project elements include two long-span bridges in the area surrounding the Sea-Tac Airport that will minimize traffic disruptions, and Sound Transit’s first passenger station incorporating on-site photovoltaic energy generation to help meet sustainability goals.
Construction is scheduled to begin early next year, with service to start in September 2016 .
“The design-build approach for the South 200th Link Extension will provide for more collaborative and efficient project delivery than traditional design-bid-build,” said Ahmad Fazel, Sound Transit executive director. “Sound Transit looks forward to working with our partner, PCL Civil Constructors, Inc., in using the design-build approach to deliver the light rail extension to South 200th Street. The project is scheduled to open for revenue service by 2016—four years earlier than previously planned.”
“We have a very good history with Sound Transit and look forward to further growing the relationship and bringing innovative, high-quality, and cost-effective solutions to this project,” said Ankur Talwar, PCL’s area manager.
“HDR is pleased to be teamed with PCL and we look forward to delivering Sound Transit’s first design-build line segment,” said Kevin Collins, HDR vice president/project design manager.
