CALGARY, Alberta– The PCL family of companies is pleased to announce that PCL Construction Management Inc. (Calgary) has been recognized for its alternative transportation initiative at the Calgary Awards. PCL won an Environmental Achievement Award in the Blue Skies category at an event on June 13.
“PCL is committed to developing and implementing sustainable initiatives in our construction practices and our internal operations,” says Owen Nordmark, PCL Calgary’s Sustainable Future Committee chair. “We realized early on that for our sustainability efforts to be successful, employee engagement was essential. It’s rewarding to be recognized for a program that was initiated and embraced by our employees.”

The Blue Skies Award is presented to a Calgary employer/organization who demonstrates commitment and leadership in implementing a successful commuter trip reduction program.
PCL employees in the Calgary district were looking to match the company’s strong track record for building sustainably with its internal practices. In May 2011, the Sustainable Future committee implemented an alternative transportation contest. Employees were informed about city pathways and transit routes, and were reminded of the company’s shower facilities and bicycle lockups. To generate further interest, monthly prizes of environmentally friendly products were awarded to participants.
Through the use of the program, PCL is accumulating, on average, 2,000 km per month of alternative transportation usage, or 24,000 km per year.
In 1994, The City of Calgary established the Calgary Awards to celebrate and recognize outstanding achievements and contributions made by Calgarians. Each year, individuals, corporations, community groups, schools, and organizations are nominated in five major award categories, for a total of 17 awards.
