Toronto, ON (October 5, 2017) – The Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) recognized the safety achievements of PCL Construction’s Ontario operations at its annual safety awards ceremony held on September 29, 2017.

"As we promote safety excellence among our members and our industry, we are encouraged to work alongside safety-minded leaders like PCL,” said OGCA president Clive Thurston. "Safety needs to be celebrated as an industry, and each of us should be proud of our achievements, because as a group, OGCA contractors are the safest contractors in the country."

The OGCA presented the awards to companies who recorded the lowest accident frequencies. PCL’s distinctions included the Category I, 2016 Milestone, and Distinguished Achievement in Health and Safety awards.

  • Selected from amongst 11 other OGCA members who individually achieved over 200,000 hours worked without a lost time incident, PCL was recognized as the Category I Winner for outstanding safety performance in achieving the most cumulative injury-free derived hours worked, with a yearly average of 2,300,585 hours over a three-year period.
  • In recognition of achieving more than one million consecutive derived hours worked without a lost time injury, PCL was presented with the 2016 OGCA Milestone Award. The total consecutive injury-free derived hours worked by PCL in 2016 was 2,118,495.
  • In addition, PCL was presented with a Distinguished Achievement in Health and Safety award for achieving Zero Injury Frequency in recognition of a four-year period between 2013 and 2016, in which PCL accumulated 9,464,864 hours without a lost time injury.

The OGCA also recognized contractors who have achieved Certificate of Recognition (COR™) status. Granted by the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association (IHSA) in Ontario, COR™ is an employee health and safety management assessment tool that is steadily becoming a pre-qualification requirement for public and private-sector projects. PCL was one of the first general contractors to achieve this prestigious designation in Ontario.

“Everyone has their own personal reason for working safely, and I want to thank everyone across our industry who plays a part in making sure that every worker returns home safely, every day,” said Jim Dougan, PCL president of Eastern Canadian operations. “By working as partners, and not just individual companies, we firmly believe we will achieve our vision of zero incidents by maintaining attention on high risk activities, reinforcing the importance of working safely, and collaborating with industry to strengthen a positive safety culture.”
