Ottawa – Buildings & Civil Construction

August 31, 2016, Ottawa –PCL Constructors Canada Inc. along with United Way Ottawa and Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) have partnered to unveil the latest project built with funds from PCL’s Hard Hat Heroes Fund. The project, a new gazebo, marks the second initiative of the fund since its inception earlier this year. The Hard Hat Heroes Fund supports capital projects that make neighborhood improvements in Ottawa.

The beautification initiative was led by an OCH senior tenants’ group and supported by employees who place great value on tenant engagement and inspiring a place of pride. Strong partnerships such as this one between United Way Ottawa, PCL and OCH, are key to strengthening communities across Ottawa.

“PCL employees want to make a difference by contributing to their communities, and partnering with the United Way has once again allowed us to help make an impact,” said Kevin Skinner, Vice-President & District Manager, PCL. “Providing the seniors with an area where they can socialize and enjoy the outdoors is important to both their physical and mental health.”

Bryce Howchin, project manager for PCL, said, As a result of the dedicated energy and enthusiasm of our PCL employees, the Golden Manor Gazebo was chosen to give the tenants a communal space to enjoy the outdoors and encourage community celebrations. We would like to thank all of our collective partners who were instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.”

“We know that one in three seniors are at risk of being socially isolated, so neighbourhood hubs like this gazebo are essential to help seniors meet with neighbors and friends,” said Dennise Taylor-Gilhen, Vice President, Community Impact, United Way Ottawa. “I want to thank PCL Constructors Canada Inc. and Ottawa Community Housing for their leadership in working together to make this project possible.”

“The Golden Manor gazebo is a combined effort between Ottawa Community Housing Corporation and Ottawa Community Housing Foundation to lead improvements for tenants and is a great addition to the community. Our engaged and knowledgeable tenants brought the idea forward and with our partners’ help we were able to complete it,” said Stéphane Giguère, Chief Executive Officer, Ottawa Community Housing. “We are very grateful to our partners PCL Constructors and United Way Ottawa for recognizing the value of investing in OCH communities. This is a truly unique, collaborative project – we are excited to work with partners who are as committed to building strong, inclusive communities as OCH is.”

The Hard Hat Heroes Fund will accept applications for its next project in the spring of 2017.
