This four-lane, two-span hydraulic bascule bridge carries traffic over the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Pompano Beach, Florida. The PCL project team rehabilitated this structure under a design-build agreement for the Florida Department of Transportation. The client’s goal was to complete structural repairs to the deteriorated structure, refurbish the bascule span hydraulic cylinders, replace the bridge control system, and renovate the existing control tower, all within their proposed budget.
Faced with these challenges, the project team proposed an innovative solution that offered the client a cost-effective design while providing a low-maintenance structure with a long component life. In lieu of repairs to the existing structural steel, PCL’s design included replacement of the bridge deck steel support system. This element of work was highlighted in the proposal, and was a deciding factor for the award of the project. PCL worked closely with the client to refine the scope of the bridge rehabilitation and optimize the project schedule to minimize impacts on the community. This aggressive approach allowed the project team to complete the rehabilitation within the original 349-day schedule, while rehabilitating the 14th Street Bridge to safely service vehicular and marine traffic for many years to come.
