24th Street East Bridge Special Repair

Project Overview

PCL Civil Constructors, Inc., was contracted to remove and replace a pre-stressed concrete beam that was damaged by an overheight vehicle. The project included the installation of a new girder, concrete diaphragms, bridge deck, sidewalk, and barrier wall.

For the demolition of the bridge girder, PCL removed the barrier with a backhoe and hammer, installed a strongback, and braced the existing grider. Next, the PCL crew performed hand demolition on the splice zone and diaphrams, and cut the rebar away from the girder. PCL removed the demo deck, hosited the girder onto the ground, and broke it up with a machine.

Using cranes, the PCL team was able to demolish and set the girder in just one night. By maintaining high standards of quality and safety, the project was completed with zero incidents, and no rework was required.
