The Entertainment & Sport Centre (ESC) was one of three major capital projects awarded to PCL by the City of Abbotsford under a design-build contract. The other two — the Abbotsford Community Recreation Centre and The Reach Gallery Museum — add to the entertainment and cultural aspects of this vibrant community.
Located on the campus of the University College of the Fraser Valley, the ESC serves as a major entertainment venue for the Fraser Valley region, with 7,000-fixed seats (including 300 club seats), 20 private suites, 15 semi-private boxes, a VIP lounge, and a regulation NHL-size rink surface. Designed with flexibility in mind, the building can accommodate a wide variety of entertainment and sports events. It also features a large kitchen and commissary that services the suites level, as well as six concessions.
Partway through PCL’s construction schedule, the client was successful in securing an American Hockey League franchise to play out of the ESC. To prepare for the team’s imminent arrival, PCL accepted the challenge of modifying several aspects of the arena as addendums to the original scope. Demonstrating the kind of teamwork that wins Stanley Cups, the PCL team proudly delivered the completed arena in time for the puck drop.
