Airport Trail Tunnel

Project Overview

PCL is the managing partner of the PCL/Parsons/Dufferin ATU Joint Venture providing construction management services to the City of Calgary for the construction of the Airport Trail Tunnel. The cast-in-place tunnel structure is designed for six traffic and two LRT lanes, connecting Barlow Trail to 36th Street under the new Calgary Airport parallel runway and taxiways.

This project is a model of how the construction management delivery can provide value to a client. Design started in April 2011, and construction of the tunnel structure under the airfield was completed in October 2012. This aggressive schedule was necessitated by the need to complete the tunnel and backfill around it without affecting the overall schedule of the runway development.

The project team overcame schedule challenges including a 5.5-month impact resulting from existing soil conditions, as well as a six-month impact resulting from the electrical scope of work. The team's mitigation efforts were successful, resulting in the achievement of the milestones to hand over backfilled portions of the tunnel to the Airport Authority. The project obtained construction completion by December 31, 2013, and was opened to traffic on May 25, 2014.
