Banff Gondola Upper Terminal Renovations

Project Overview

The Banff Gondola Upper Terminal Renovation was a negotiated construction management project with Brewster Inc., a repeat client for PCL. The original building was demolished to its concrete structure for the project to begin a complete four-floor renovation. Since the gondola is a tourist destination, the client requested multiple partial occupancies of various areas within the building; this was achieved as per the schedule.

The building is situated on the top of Sulphur Mountain, at the south end of Banff, Alberta. The location presented the project team with a challenge in organizing construction materials, as access to the site was restricted to gondola car or the use of a 2.8 km hiking trail. To coordinate movement up the mountain of materials that surpassed a single car’s weight limit, the project team would connect two gondola cars in tandem in addition to the number of helicopter lifts PCL allowed. The project team was in constant communication with Parks Canada to ensure all requirements were being met, and to maintain awareness of possible wildlife spotting and interaction and of the importance of environmental assessments on and around the site.
