The Chaz is the Yorkville area's newest premium condominium. At grade, Chaz is an elegant five-storey, limestone-clad pavilion with a series of punched recessed windows. Stepping back from the pavilion on the sixth, Chaz, the tower, soars forty-seven storeys into the sky and contains 526 units. Below grade, the building has six basement levels, five of which are for parking.
Jutting out from the 31st and 32nd levels on the south side of the building is a two-storey cantilevered box, framed in white concrete and illuminated at night. This is the Chaz Club, a lounge and dining space for the building's residents.
The challenge in constructing the Chaz Club was that the immense weight the formwork needed to support at that length of cantilever produced huge reactionary forces on the structure. PCL, along with the structural engineer, came up with the solution of using structural beams to transfer the loads to the building columns. This allowed the project to stay on schedule and made it possible to have four additional units per floor.
