The Chinook Centre Expansion project is a two-story addition to the northeast corner of the existing facility, plus renovations to the existing mall. The 265,000-square-foot expansion and accompanying renovations were all carried out while the mall, one of Canada’s busiest, remained fully operational. There are two levels of cast-in-place concrete; 475,000 square feet of underground parking; and two levels of structural steel in the mall addition. The new corridor tie-ins required renovations to the existing mall to blend the old with the new. Part of the renovation included extending the new clerestory over the existing common mall area at the interface locations.
A slim 60 days between substantial completion and the public grand opening meant PCL had just two months to complete store fitouts. Once wrapped, this 740,000-square-foot project added 54 new tenant spaces, 23 reconfigured tenant spaces, and 1,200 new underground parking stalls.
