PCL’s construction of the new CitiTower Luxury Apartment building in downtown Orlando brings a new sight to the Orlando skyline. At two hundred and ninety-three feet, CitiTower is the tenth-tallest building in Orlando, soaring twenty-five stories above the city. With the city of Orlando being one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States, CitiTower’s two hundred and thirty-three units provide luxury living space to hundreds of Orlando locals. Residents of the studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments are treated to sweeping views of Lake Eola and the vibrant, surrounding Thornton Park neighborhood. The building’s upscale amenities include a rooftop pool and outdoor lounge area, as well as a fully equipped fitness center open around the clock.
CitiTower’s twenty-five slab decks proved a perfect opportunity for PCL to bring cost and schedule benefits to the owner while self-performing 21,000 cubic yards of concrete. PCL’s engineers used a Robotic Total Station as a layout tool to quickly verify the alignment of concrete forms before pouring slabs. The engineers first attached glass prisms to CitiTower’s surrounding buildings, to provide the fixed reference points used to establish controls on-site. With controls established, the PCL team could pinpoint slab edges with physical points identified. This approach saved countless hours for the on-site carpenters when building concrete forms, and eliminated the need for an on-site surveyor. PCL’s implementation of the Robotic Total Station allowed the PCL team and trade-contractor partners to complete the slab decks faster and with greater precision.
