City of North Vancouver Library and Civic Plaza

Project Overview

Targeting LEED Gold, the North Vancouver City Library is a showcase of sustainability. Solar water heating panels provide 20% of energy needs for the heating system, a radiant slab heating/cooling ceiling system efficiently maintains internal temperature, and the lighting system is equipped with daylight dimming controls.

The library spans 36,000 square feet over three floors, with a two-level, below-grade parkade and a 28,000-square-foot outdoor plaza. To ensure quality and manage the budget in a volatile construction market, PCL self-performed the concrete work for the cast-in-place structure, placing 4,500 cubic yards of concrete over a nine-month period. In its first six months of operation, the library welcomed 6,000 new members, and saw an 80 percent increase in borrowing.
