Ernest F. Lyons High Level Design-Build Bridge Replacement

Project Overview

This 4,600-foot, two-lane bridge spans the Intracoastal Waterway and is a vital hurricane evacuation route between the town of Sewall’s Point and Hutchinson Island near Stuart, Florida. This high-level, precast segmental bridge constructed for the Florida Department of Transportation contains typical span lengths of 152 feet and a vertical clearance of 65 feet in the navigation channel.

Located within an aquatic preserve, the bridge had to be replaced while preserving the sensitive marine environment. As such, the project team employed a top-down delivery method that used accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques to erect all precast segments, thereby minimizing the need for marine equipment and reducing environmental impacts.

Despite being hit by three hurricanes, the project team completed this design-build project nine months early. In addition, this innovative construction approach and accelerated schedule saved the client $14 million.
