Ewa Makai Middle School exemplifies the new single-building prototype school for the State of Hawaii Department of Education, and is the client’s first LEED-certified school. The 192,000-square-foot structure, situated on 18.5 acres in west Oahu, is a mixture of cast-in-place concrete, masonry, and structural steel. The building hosts classrooms, computer labs, art rooms, woodworking shops, family science areas, band practice rooms, dance studios, multimedia/technology studios, locker/shower rooms, a library, a cafeteria, and administration areas.
The project was designed to meet a minimum of LEED Silver certification, but Nordic PCL found and documented extra credits that had not been previously identified. This client-focused approach led to the building’s surpassing LEED Silver certification and attaining Gold.
