Expedition Everest is a high-speed train adventure that combines coaster-like thrills with the excitement of a close encounter of the hairy kind: a yeti. The coaster climbs 120 feet, runs both inside and outside the mountain, includes an 80-foot drop, and reaches speeds of 50 miles per hour.
PCL's scope of work included site work (with extensive fill), concrete foundation, exterior shotcrete retaining walls, and erection of the mountain structure and ride steel. Many unique tools were used in the design and construction of the thrill ride, one of which allowed the PCL team to solve challenges ahead of time. Using the Disney Imagineers’ integrated 3-D/4-D model, in combination with a foam scale model, the team was able to preview the integration of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; special effects; rockwork tunnels; ride track; and supporting steel. This innovative program saved both time and money by eliminating potential errors.
