Health Research Innovation Centre - Laboratory Building

Project Overview

This laboratory is a five-story, cast-in-place concrete structure anchored by two ten-story office blocks at either end of the building. With a total area of approximately 50,000 square meters (538,195 sq. ft.), the laboratory was designed to evolve as needed. Six interstitial floors can accommodate mechanical and electrical services between the slabs, which allows for modifications to future fitouts without disrupting surrounding laboratories. The interior includes six elevators, stone work, millwork paneling, and glass balustrades with stainless steel handrails.

To maximize circulation planning, PCL assisted with the design and constructability of the building and the four interior pedestrian bridges between the laboratory and existing campus buildings. The project team worked very successfully within the tight constraints of an active university campus, and maintained the live service tunnel flanking the building on two sides.
