Project Overview

The Hickory Groundwater Treatment Plant facility is the final phase of a five-year effort to provide a source of clean drinking water to the nearly 100,000 residents of the city of San Angelo. Although the City has had the rights to the Hickory Aquifer since the 1960s, the project was put on hold due to poor water quality, a lack of available technology, and the cost of treatment. However, the City kicked off the project five years ago, and within the past year, a 30-inch pipeline was built to transmit the water from the wells, which are located approximately 30 miles east of the city, to the Hickory Treatment Facility.

Before the water is delivered to the city’s residents, the water must be treated to remove the radium and other contaminants. To help the City accomplish the task of providing purified drinking water to the community, PCL built a new 8 MGD groundwater treatment facility. As part of the project, the PCL team installed above-ground and underground piping and valves, process gas liquid handling equipment, and purification and storage equipment, which includes a chlorine scrubber, chemical pumps, oxidation contact vessels, pressure filters, and a radium removal system. PCL demolished the existing buildings and constructed new buildings to house the equipment. Start-up and commissioning services were also included.
