Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama Campus

Project Overview

The prestigious Kamehameha Schools at Kapalama is the main campus for the college preparatory institution that specializes in Native Hawaiian language and cultural education. The strategic redevelopment project was the culmination of a $118-million Ke Kupu Malamalama, or master redevelopment plan, that would be the largest single construction project undertaken in the campus’ history.

The project encompassed five buildings under a single contract: the Koaia Athletic Facility, the Kaiwakiloumoku Hawaiian Cultural Center, the middle school, a parking structure, and middle school dormitories.

Nordic PCL encountered logistical challenges---from unforeseen conditions (including poor soil conditions and misplaced utilities) to working on an active campus with over 3,000 students---that required detailed communication about road and utility shutdowns.

In addition, the project team provided design-assist suggestions to help the client find the most efficient solutions. One of the ideas implemented consisted of using insulating concrete forms for the Cultural Center retaining walls to reduce costs.
