In under four months the Special Projects Division transformed a portion of the fourth floor of the Edmonton Tower into a 7,500-square-foot sanctuary for young children. Large windows allow ample natural light into the center’s eight classrooms, while the 2,059-square-foot outdoor terrace playground offers children a safe outdoor space to play.
Extensive safety standards needed to be met throughout the design and construction phases to safeguard the children’s wellbeing. Safety standards included installation of double hand railings in two stairwells from the fourth level to the main level; ensuring all water reaching the daycare did not exceed specific heating or cooling temperatures; rounding all edges within the daycare; and designing all doors as two half doors.
To ensure that the building met the proper codes, PCL worked closely with city code officers and facilitated numerous facility pre-inspections. The team’s proactive approach prevented the need for rework and resulted in the project being delivered on schedule and on budget.
