FILTER PROJECTS BY

Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre

Project Overview

PCL delivered this design-build hospital 18 weeks ahead of schedule! The remaining portions of the project, which included the demolition of the existing hospital, and completion of the site parking and landscaping, built on that success and were completed nearly eight months ahead of schedule.

The new 6,000-square-meter facility was built on two levels, with site topography allowing for at-grade entrances on both levels. It was designed to take full advantage of views of Burns Lake and the surrounding area.

The use of curtain wall in the lobbies, combined with a central atrium, maximizes natural light within the facility. The massing of the building was designed to fit into the community by using the site’s slope to achieve a single-floor elevation on the north side of the building, which neighbors a residential community.

Building highlights include the use of Glulam beams and exposed wood deck roofs at the main entry points—both are symbolic to a community where forestry is primary industry. A clerestory rises above the central area of the building, again highlighting heavy timber construction while bringing light to the middle of the facility.
