The Laurier Taché Garage provides underground parking for 1,750 vehicles at the Place du Portage government business center in Gatineau, Quebec. As one of the largest underground parking garages in Canada, this structure had seen the effects of time and was in need of rehabilitation, repair, and structure replacement.
PCL completed the removal and replacement of three levels of structural slabs (569,303 square feet) in three major, year-long phases. The existing beams and columns were reutilized in place, and beams from the slab-on-grade to the underside of ground level were completely reshored. Concrete was removed with hydro demolition, and traditional pneumatic concrete chipping techniques were used for detailing and removal of the remaining concrete.
The fire alarm, mechanical ventilation, lighting, and main sprinkler systems were interconnected as part of the overall Place du Portage government complex. These components required substantial testing, verification, and commissioning at both the start and end of each phase, as well as at the end of the entire project, to ensure the complete integration of all systems. This testing was completed either before or after regular business hours so as not to disrupt parking garage patrons.
