The East Valley High School project in Los Angeles added 65 classrooms and labs, and 1,392 two-semester seats, for students in ninth to twelfth grade. Construction of the school relieved overcrowding at the nearby Grant and North Hollywood high schools. The new building sits on 5.4 acres and includes a library, a student store, a health office, food service, a cafeteria, an auditorium, a gymnasium, a dance classroom, a choral classroom, a music/ instrumental classroom, chemistry labs, biology labs, physical science labs, multimedia/computer labs, and administration offices. The project also included 162 stalls of parking for students and faculty.
The client instituted an outreach effort during this project to capture participation by small business entities (SBE). In support, PCL’s onsite staff helped subcontractors become SBE-certified or use certified vendors and subtrades. When the HVAC subtrade didn’t meet the certification criteria, for example, PCL worked with them to utilize second- and third-tier firms as part of their scope. By providing SBE applications on site, and by acting as advisor to the subtrades, PCL facilitated this project’s exceeding the required SBE goals.
