Longs Drugs Distribution Center

Project Overview

The Longs Drugs Distribution Center is a 108,040-square-foot warehouse for CVS (Longs Drugs) in Kapolei, with loading docks in the rear, two floors of office space, a training room, and an indoor/outdoor break area. The building comprises a high-performance concrete slab-on-grade, 42-foot-high tilt-up concrete walls, and single-ply roofing membrane. The project required the unique application of a shake-on hardener to create extremely flat and hard floors.

From prior experience, Nordic PCL knew that using the shake-on hardener in a tilt-up situation presented a challenge. Without a roof overhead to provide shelter, the wind and rain could ruin the hardener before it cured. Nordic PCL's solution was to work in the early morning hours, sometimes even starting at midnight during the two-week concrete-pouring period. The cool night air allowed curing and hydration of the concrete surface. Placing concrete slabs during the early morning hours offered the added benefit of less traffic, which enabled quick and continuous concrete delivery. In the end, the slab-on-grade exceeded the client's stringent specifications for flatness and levelness, and no concrete rework was required.
