The LRT stations at Century Park and Southgate Centre eased traffic congestion in a growing city and provided an alternative transportation system for travel to work, school, and sporting events. PCL served as Construction Manager on both stations, and delivered the projects on time and on budget.
Each facility has an entrance building, a two-story LRT station and platform situated between the tracks, a two-story transit center, and grade-separated overpass pedway structures connecting all three buildings.
An early challenge was to open the Southgate Station bus loop a month earlier than originally planned. This was necessary to allow the demolition of a temporary transit station, allowing the other LRT roadway and trackway work to be completed prior to winter. The project was successfully completed in a highly congested area with more than 20,000 vehicles travelling daily along the roads adjacent to the project sites and 400 buses arriving and departing each day. PCL managed the congested work space through just-in-time delivery schedules, meticulous field management at the sites, and constant awareness and communication of the HSE risks.
