Project Overview

This vertical lift bridge over the St. John’s River used a counterweight, wire ropes, and machinery to operate the lift span. In the open position, the bridge provides 135 feet of vertical clearance for waterway vessels.

The client’s goal on this project was to rehabilitate this historic structure by removing existing lead-based paint and performing extensive structural steel and concrete repairs. Because the Main Street Bridge is a major route into downtown Jacksonville, Florida, PCL minimized traffic disruption by coordinating with the client, the local community, and the United States Coast Guard to perform all concrete and steel repairs during weekend and evening bridge closures.
