Mall of America is the largest indoor mall in America, with over 4.2 million square feet of retail, restaurants, and entertainment. Inside is enough space to fit seven Yankee Stadiums. Forty million people visit the mall each year.
The mall is nearly symmetrical, with a rectangular floor plan that includes over 500 stores across three levels. Four anchor department stores are located at the corners, and the mall’s east side features a fourth level. Attached to the mall on the east and west are two five-level parking structures that accommodate a combined total of 12,287 vehicles. In the mall’s center, a seven-acre Nickelodeon Universe amusement park enjoys summer conditions all year long beneath its glass roof. It also includes multiple movie theatres, Lego Land, and a below-grade aquarium.
Mall of America stands on the site of the former Metropolitan Stadium, home to the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins until 1982. In fact, inside Nickelodeon Universe is a bronze home plate plaque installed in the exact location as the original home plate in Metropolitan Stadium.
