Markham Stouffville Hospital Redevelopment

Project Overview

This 630,000-square-foot major hospital redevelopment project was undertaken to meet the needs of a growing population and enhance access to essential health-care services. Phase 1 consisted of the construction of a new addition to the existing hospital building, thereby doubling the size of the overall facility. Phase 2 consisted of 24 separate renovations that were completed in areas of the existing building that needed to remain operational. As such, rigorous infection and dust-control procedures were implemented to ensure staff and patient safety. This renovation scope of work encompassed 260,000 square feet of the existing space. New programs include a new emergency department, expanded ambulatory clinics, more inpatient beds and operating rooms, a new diagnostic imaging department, a new maternal/child area, and a new mental-health unit.

This build/finance project was delivered under the Government of Ontario’s Infrastructure Ontario Alternate Financing Program (AFP) and has achieved LEED Silver certification for construction of the new addition.
