Zoo Miami Amazon & Beyond

Project Overview

This 28-acre expansion for the Zoo Miami features nine buildings, seven large exhibits, four viewing pavilions, and three aviaries that invite visitors to experience the “Amazon & Beyond.” This showcase of Central and South American plants and animals in a replica of their natural habitat is the zoo’s first major construction project since its opening in 1948, and it meets the client’s original long-term goal to have one continuous path through the zoo.

The PCL project team prepared for cost-saving techniques from Day One. By holding meetings with subcontractors to discuss voluntary value-engineering items, the innovative idea to use plastic pool pumps with integral basket strainers instead of the specified frame-mounted, epoxy-coated pumps, saved approximately $148,000. Another $100,000 in savings was realized by using natural boulders instead of shotcrete boulders around the exhibits. PCL also redesigned the Plaza Lake shoreline, omitting three stairways to the lake and a cobblestone beach, resulting in an additional savings of $100,000.
