The MTS Centre is a state-of-the-art, multipurpose sports and entertainment venue that greatly enhances the city of Winnipeg's downtown culture. The 15,000-seat arena includes a private suite level, food outlets, three wide concourses, a retail store, ample washrooms, several floors of office space, and an adjacent heritage building that has been redeveloped as a sports bar and restaurant. Four connections to Winnipeg's skywalk system and three underground tunnels link the center to thousands of heated indoor parking stalls and provide easy access to and from the facility. The project team completed the concrete work using PCL's labor force and equipment, including four freestanding tower cranes.
The original schedule allowed for 24 months of construction, but the project team undertook a number of initiatives to reduce that by three months . Some of these initiatives included doubling the quantity of formwork, increasing the labor force, and working overtime through the concrete work.
This MTS Centre was a huge success for the client. Over the course of the project, PCL formed a lasting relationship with the ownership group. Less than one year after launching into operation, the facility was ranked among the most successful entertainment facilities in the world.
