Newton Denver Municipal Auditorium Renovation

Project Overview

Originally built in 1907, the Newton Denver Municipal Auditorium is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the Denver Performing Arts Complex’s anchor facility. While preserving the historic, exterior façade during this renovation project, PCL completely transformed the interior into 221,000 square feet of world-class performing arts space, housing (among other things) the 2,268-seat Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Throughout construction, PCL worked harmoniously with the eight other operational performance venues in the complex.

During the early stages of design development, PCL provided extensive cost-saving suggestions to accommodate the client’s budget. Of particular note was the team’s innovative approach to the structural shoring and bracing of the perimeter walls and foundations. Their suggestion to proceed simultaneously with dismantling, bracing, and reconstructing saved the client over $1 million and made for a safer and faster installation.
