Niagara Health System - St. Catharines Site

Project Overview

The Niagara Health System St. Catharines site replaces the aging St. Catharines General Hospital. This six-story, 980,000-square-foot LEED Silver certified complex features a cancer center (including three radiation bunkers) to provide close-to-home, life-saving radiation treatment, and a regional mental health center with long-term mental health beds; 80% of rooms are private. The patient-focused community hospital holds 375 beds, as well as healing gardens, ponds, and walking paths.

The project’s design-build-finance-maintain contract was issued through Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Finance and Procurement (AFP) program, with PCL as consortium leader of the design-build effort. The tight timelines and significant complexities of such a large hospital have led to the development of numerous innovations in mechanical and electrical coordination, application of Building Information Modeling (virtual construction), communication with user groups, and equipment procurement and installation processes.
