The Sharp Centre for Design is a unique table-top structure that has become one of Toronto’s most exciting architectural landmarks. The center houses the college’s design programs, including the Faculties of Art and Liberal Arts Studies. The remarkable superstructure, with its striking black and white pixellated skin, stands 26 meters (85 ft.) above the ground on 12 multicoloured legs. The structure provides two stories of studio and teaching space, and is connected to an existing facility below by an elevator and stair core. This core forms the central focus of the newly created entrance hall, uniting the two halves of the existing university buildings at all levels.
PCL’s experience with confined urban areas proved essential in completing this project, as the college is surrounded by buildings in an active part of the city.
