Built for both local and international events and located at the busy Keele Campus of York University, Aviva Centre is many things: a 12,500-seat open-bowl stadium, a stand-alone Centre of Excellence tennis complex with four indoor tennis courts, and an inflatable dome covering four tennis courts and seven outdoor practice courts. The stadium also includes approximately 65,000 square feet of office space, commissary, lounges, dining rooms, locker rooms, and public spaces.
PCL constructed this project under major time constraints, as the client had committed to hosting a major tennis competition. This was further complicated by a need to obtain conservation authority permits prior to the project’s completion. PCL worked with local authorities and consultants to obtain the permits, and made sure that the project was completed on time and on budget. PCL also had to be mindful of the busy operational campus, ensuring there were few disruptions during the construction phase.
