Located at the Canadian Exhibition Place in Toronto, Ontario, the Ricoh Coliseum expansion project transformed an 82-year-old facility into a state-of-the-art, multiuse sports and entertainment venue. Seating capacity was expanded by 3,000 seats, including 38 private suites, and concession stands and ancillary amenities for the venue were upgraded. As the property is protected by the Toronto Historical Society, PCL was required to follow significant preservation and restoration guidelines.
As part of the Exhibition Place revitalization strategy, surrounding venues were required to remain operational during construction. PCL contained all construction activities (laydown areas, equipment staging, etc.) within the existing Coliseum facility to ensure minimal disruption to Exhibition Place’s high-profile events, such as the Molson Indy.
Construction began on this design-build project with only five conceptual drawings. PCL fasttracked the schedule so that design progressed concurrently with construction activities to ensure that Exhibition Place’s timeline for the grand opening was met. This project was delivered on time, and on budget, in just 10 months.
