Rideau Centre Retail Expansion

Project Overview

The Rideau Centre is located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, on Rideau Street, between Colonel By Drive and Nicholas Street. The new expansion adds both retail and parking space, as well as a modern façade along the length of Rideau Street and other key entryways.

The expansion comprises three levels of underground parking that house 375 parking spaces, and four levels of retail space above grade, for a total area in the new expansion of 553,609 square feet. The floor plate of the new expansion is approximately 72,150 square feet per level and houses primarily larger tenants. Integral to the new design is a significant oval skylight bringing natural light to all levels of the retail expansion. The design also flows out into the surrounding area to incorporate the construction of a substantial below-grade LRT access, an above-grade bridge revitalization, and adjacent streetscaping, creating a pedestrian-friendly public space abutting the expansion.

The expansion has been built, in part, on the site of the former Ogilvy Building, a historical landmark built in 1908 for retailer Charles Ogilvy. Historical elements of this building were removed, catalogued, crated, and shipped off-site for storage, then reinstalled as part of the new expansion façade.
