Built between 1908 and 1912, the Saskatchewan Legislative Building is nationally and provincially designated as a historic site, and it is the largest heritage restoration project in Saskatchewan. The Envelope Investigation project was the client’s initial foray into developing a design and construction plan for the complete rehabilitation of the building envelope.
Since the Legislative Building is situated directly in front of Wascana Lake, where special events are held year round, the PCL team configured the construction site to blend into the surroundings and be minimally intrusive. The effort was successful despite the erection of a 1,200-square-foot engineered scaffold that stretched 10 stories and was both fully enclosed and heated. This controlled environment facilitated completion of the required masonry repairs but remained unobtrusive.
At the successful completion of the project, PCL produced a detailed as-built schedule of the work completed, as well as a phased construction plan and budget for the remainder of the building.
