Seattle Area Bridges - Phase 2 Expansion Joint Repair

Project Overview

Washing State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) I-5 bridge endured nearly 50 years of constant traffic, which weakened its steel expansion joints connecting the concrete spans that make up the interstate. PCL was contracted to replace 26 bridge expansion joints that will help preserve I-5 well into the future and save drivers hours of unexpected delays caused by emergency highway repairs.

PCL and WSDOT were tasked to coordinate around the city’s many sporting events: the Seahawks' (NFL) road to the Super Bowl, the Sounders (MLS), the Mariners (MLB), and the Storm (WMBA). The crew is under constant observation by commuters and media during weekend closures. These closures can have a maximum of 68 crew members on-site, performing repairs on separate bridges. Maintaining schedule, adhering to environmental concerns, providing proactive community outreach, and meeting apprenticeship training hours has made this five-month, $2.8-million project, an exhilarating experience for all those involved.
