The 320,000-square-foot Servus Credit Union Place in St. Albert houses an aquatic area, three ice arenas, a fitness facility, two indoor soccer fields, a gymnasium, a 2,000 seat performance arena, a running track, an administration arena, a children's play area, retail space, and meeting rooms.
PCL provided general contractor services for this expansion to the existing twin arenas, as well as for the renovation of an existing operational building. The performance arena and field house areas are preengineered buildings, utilizing cast-in-place concrete with seating. The majority of the facility had concrete block infill walls, and the aquatic and concourse areas are structural steel with concrete on metal deck. The arena and aquatic areas have a structural slab on grade, supported by piles due to the amount of fill material required.
The client looked to PCL for preconstruction services to achieve cost savings and constructability reviews early in the project. Throughout the design-build process, PCL and the consultants fasttracked the construction and achieved cost savings that the client used to upgrade sports flooring and lighting, and to completely fit-out the kitchen space, all of which was beyond the original scope.
